In Kind Canada's Art In Action Program

The February 2000 budget included changes, which in effect made art donations subject to Capital Gains. Since that time IKC has seen a significant decline in the volume of donated artwork. Some donations of framed artwork are still taking place, and each fall we also see donations of boxed sets of un-framed prints. We are keeping a list of those agencies who can use these forms of artwork in fund raising. If you wish to have your name added to this list please contact Cristina at the national office of In Kind Canada. We will advise agencies when the artwork becomes available. Each fall we will also post samples of the boxed artwork for you to view.

With the demand for fund raising events by our members IKC has met with galleries in Southern Ontario and we are pleased to announce a new "Art In Action" program. This program will be similar in many respects to Charity Golf Tournaments where an agency purchases an entire package. Charities will be responsible for arranging location, promoting the event and possible securing an event sponsor. This is a no-risk fund raising option for charities to consider.

All three options offered to Charities through IKC's Art in Action program are co-ordinated through Uptown Gallery of Toronto. For further information on these options please go directly to their: web site or e-mail now. Uptown Gallery of Toronto's e-mail address is [email protected].

Review the three options shown below and then contact In Kind Canada indicating the type of support you require for your charity auction. A full information package will be mailed to you.

  1. Full Auction:
  2. In this scenario the event manager works with the charity to organize and run an art auction of 100-120 items. The event would include a wide range of art with values ranging from $50-$5000 and opening bids generally starting at 35% - 45% of the value. The charity would receive 20% - 25% of the income generated from the sale (depending on sales volume). This type of event would be suitable for a participant charity that has a good support base and is confident that it can bring 150 people out to an event. The charity would be responsible for most of the organization of the event including the venue, catering (if required), advertising and volunteer support at the sale. We would provide the art, catalogue, auctioneer services and advice on the organization and advertising of the event.

  3. Auction/Event Support:
  4. This arrangement can supplement an existing event with the services of an auctioneer and a number of pieces of art (as determined by the charity). The art helps to fill out and add another element to the event. The auctioneer will auction the art and other items provided by the group and can often be more effective than a silent auction process by providing more information on an item and encouraging bidding. The charity would, as above, receive 20% - 25% of the art sales and would compensate the auctioneer through a fee for the non-art items. The terms of this arrangement would be worked out based on the number of pieces of art provided.

  5. Art Consignment/Sale:

Art can be consigned to an event (generally 10-20 pieces) and again the group would receive 20%-25% of the sale income. The art would be accompanied by information on the artist and the value of the piece. The group would be responsible for picking up the art in Toronto and returning any unsold items. A minimum bid amount would be assigned to the pieces (35%-40% of the value) so that the charity would certainly have a good chance of selling all pieces at an event.

This program is available to all members of In Kind Canada. If you would like more information regarding the Art In Action program, please contact Cristina Greco with your organization's name and date of event.
